Upon arrival they found a car had struck an Maryland State Police car on a traffic stop, trapping the state trooper in his vehicle. The main lanes of I270 were closed down while crews extricated the trooper from the heavily damaged car and a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter landed. The trooper was transported by helicopter to a local trauma center. Other injured persons were treated and transported to local hospitals.
Drivers are reminded of the Maryland State “Move Over” law that requires motorists approaching from the rear an emergency vehicle using visual signals while stopped on a highway to, if possible, ‘make a lane change into an available lane not immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle.’ This movement should only be done if another lane in the same direction is open and moving into that lane can be made safely and without impeding other traffic. If changing to another lane away is not possible, the law requires drivers to ‘slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing weather, road, and vehicular or pedestrian traffic conditions.
