Cold Weather Taxes Resources

January 8, 2014 – The recent cold weather in the Rockville area, that say temperatures drop below 0 degrees, greatly taxed fire and rescue services. Throughout Montgomery County, calls were received for water issues related to broken water pipes, fire alarms triggered due to broken sprinkler pipes and medical calls for falls due to ice. January 4, 2013 – RVFD held its annual award ceremony at the Apollo Restaurant in Rockville. I270 Collision

December 29, 2013 – RVFD and other MCFRS units responded to a collision on Northbound I270 between the split and Montrose Rd. Arriving first, E703 reported one vehicle into the center jersey barrier with two possible traumas and four other involved vehicles in the right shoulder lanes. Collision with Fatality

December 28, 2013 – RVFD units responded to a collision at Maryland Ave. and Great Falls Rd. with a reported one pinned. C703 arrived first and reported a T-bone collision with one victim pinned in the front passenger seat who was in cardiac arrest due to trauma. Dryer Fire in Apartment

December 22, 2013 – RVFD units responded for a reported water leak in a garden style apartment. Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke and requested the box alarm. AT703 found fire in a dryer on the fourth floor. They quickly extinguished the fire. Other arriving units conducted a search of the apartments, checked for any extension and ventilated the smoke. Saturday Afternoon House Fire

December 21, 2013 – RVFD and MCFRS units responded to a reported house fire on Baylor Ave. at 12:30p. While responding, communications advised they were starting the Rapid Intervention Dispatch indicating a likely working fire. First arriving units found a two-story single family home with smoke showing. Station 3 units entered through the front door and found fire and smoke in two areas on the first floor. Overturned Vehicle on I-270

December 7, 2013 – RVFD units responded to southbound I-270 CD lanes between Falls Rd. and Montrose Rd. for reported vehicle overturned. Units found one overturned car under the Wooten Pkwy overpass with one victim trapped inside. C703F established command. RS703’s crew stabilized the vehicle and used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the driver’s side doors allowing the victim to be removed. RVFD Rescues Hockey Tournament

November 29, 2013 – RVFD Deputy Chief Jim Vagonis, along with his son Firefighter Candidate Justin Vagonis, came to the rescue of the International Silver Sticks Ice Hockey Tournament. Due to a water main break on Southlawn La., the Rockville Ice Arena had no water and the tournament was in danger of being cancelled. Fatal PIC on I270

November 12, 2013 – RVFD units were dispatched to Northbound I270 near the I370 overpass. for a reported collision with entrapment. Units found a two-vehicle collision with one person trapped in one of the car and a fatality in the other. RS703’s crew removed the door and “B” post and the driver was removed and transported to a local trauma center. The driver of the second vehicle was a fatality.
